Self harming, suicide, anxiety. All common symptoms of
dealing with depression. Depression can occur of any gender of any age. However
as the years have gone on, the rise of depression within teenagers has
increased by 70 percent in the last 25 years.
The majority of citizens age 30 and above can agree with the
fact that the generation that teenagers now grow up in is completely different
from what they had grew up in and this has had a very big impact on teenagers
today. There were not much stresses or expectations in the olden days in the
content of what teenagers now worry about such as the brand of clothing they
have got, their friends/social life, appearance and many others. These are
common factors that teenagers now a days deal with.
As the years have gone on, depression has been something has
been more widely spoken about and accepted however depression within teenagers
is more common than what people think. Teenagers now a day are put under an
extense amount of pressure from parents, society and growing up in general which
can really take a toll on the way they feel. Depression can be caused by
different factors including:
-
Family problems
-
Finical problems
-
Divorced parents
-
Bullying at school
-
Peer pressure
-
School stress
The points listed above are just a few factors that can
cause teenagers to fall into depression. However there are many more facilities
that are available in order to get help such as concilers, help lines,
family/friends yet why are teenagers not able to go talk to someone about what
they are feeling whether they think they are suffering from depression or not? Due to the constant strain of different
factors expected in their life, teenagers feel as if they are confined with
what they are feeling and usually brush it off because they have so much going
on in their life. One of the main causes of anxiety/depression is through the
stress of school and high expecattaions that are put in place by
family.Research that was conducted by The mental Health Charity states that
they have found that exams are a big trigger in more mental illness within
young teenagers including depression.Furthermore teenagers feel as if they are
not able to talk to anyone about what they are feeling as they will be considered
weak or as if they are going through a phase as they are ‘hormonal’. Therefore
no one is really taking them seriously which makes them feel confide in the
content of who they can talk to and who they can go to. This is not an easy
subject to talk about.
